Cover Letter

It is my heart’s desire (life goal?) to break down barriers as a storyteller.

Through many avenues, I heighten awareness of different cultures to invite understanding and facilitate relationship-building between individuals and communities. I have the fortitude and forthrightness, not to mention strength of character, to self-publish my novels, and am ready for professional guidance and a larger network to spread my vision. As a filmmaker, I have produced and directed a documentary about Somali youth in Minnesota who were recruited by religious fanatics and disappeared.

My film “Pursued” was selected by Women’s International Film & Arts Festival, Sydney International Film Festival and was nominated for best film by Cairo Indie Film festival and won the best director in Jharkhand international film festival for 2021. Multi-talented, I produced, directed, and starred “The Lobby,” a romantic story between a white (American?) man and Somali-American woman and their cultural differences, a film that premiered at an international film festival in 2015.

My newest novel “Mahadho” follows a first-generation Somali-American woman whose family disapproves of the young man she loves because his father is of a Somalian untouchable caste. Currently, I have two screenplays completed, a feature film about a Syrian refugee store clerk who becomes a target of white supremacy during the 2016 presidential campaign, and a story about a heartbroken Somali-American woman who visits where poet Bodheri died of a broken heart.

I look forward to discussing a mutually beneficial relationship at your earliest convenience. Thank you so much for your time!

                                                                                                                                                Respectfully,

                                                                                                                                                 Fathia Absie
